街中でゆっくりと行動している高齢者を見たことはありませんか？
高齢者は筋力も衰え、体力も低下しています。
そのためゆっくりと活動するのが普通です。
例えば、同居している高齢者の家族が、忙しくしている家族のために洗濯をしてくれたとします。
気持ちはすごくありがたいけど、余計に時間がかかってしまい、結果、いつもよりも時間がかかってしまうという話をよく耳にします。
家族としては、「何もしなくていいから、ゆっくりしてて」という風に気遣いをしているつもりが、実はこの「気遣い」が高齢者の生きる意欲を削いでしまっている場合が多くあります。
ではなぜこの「気遣い」が生きる意欲を削いでしまっているのでしょう？
今回は、同居している両親が意欲的な生活を送るためには、何が大切なのかを説明したいと思います。
目次
高齢者が出来ている事とは？
前述のとおり、高齢者は体力や筋力が低下し、なかなか若いころの様に動けないという特徴があります。
しかし年をとったとはいえ、一家を支え、私たちのために仕事や家事をこなされてきた経緯があるため、たとえ時間がかかっても大抵のことはできます。
つまり生活に必要な事はまだまだ現役で行えるという事です。
「掃除や洗濯、食事作りや買い物など」を、手段的日常生活動作（IADL）といい、日々の生活を送っていくために必要な手段的な動作です。
「食事・排泄・入浴・更衣など」は、日常生活動作（ADL）といい、生きていく上で必要な生活動作を言います。
実はこの生活に必要な行動は、高齢者にとって「生活リハビリ」と言われています。
生きていく上で必要な生活動作自体がすでにリハビリになっているという考え方です。
家事はリハビリ
例えば洗濯をもとに説明してみましょう。
洗濯は過程や動作も多く、身体の様々な部分の筋力が必要になります。
①まずは洗濯機を使うために操作方法を覚えておく必要があります。
洗濯物の量によって洗剤や柔軟剤の量を加減する必要もあり、脳の活性化が見込めます。
②洗濯が終わると取り出し作業から、物干しの過程に移ります。
２階のベランダで干されている家庭もあれば、一階の庭で干す家庭もあります。
いずれにせよ、その場所まで重い洗濯物を運ぶ必要があるため、足の脚力や手の腕力が必要となり、鍛える事ができます。
③洗濯物干す作業では、先ほどの腕力に加え、肩の筋力も必要になります。
しわを伸ばすために手先の筋力も鍛えられ、洗濯ばさみを使えば指先の運動にもなります。
④洗濯物が乾いた後は取り込み作業です。
ハンガーにかけたまま収納する人や、たたんでタンスに収納する人もいると思いますが、ここでも様々な動作が必要になります。
このように洗濯一つとってみても、様々な動作や移動が必要となります。
一人暮らしの人ですと量も少なく、毎日洗濯する必要はありませんが、同居家族の分も高齢者が行うとなると、なかなかの重労働となり、怪我のリスクがないとも限りません。
その大変さがわかっている分、両親には少しでも楽をしてもらおうと同居家族がいたわるのも、当然のことと言えます。
頼られることが高齢者を元気にさせる
相手を思いやり、気遣う気持ちはとても大切な心の働きです。
お世話になっている人や両親ならなおさらのこと。
しかしこの気遣いこそが、高齢者の生きる意欲を削いでしまう事があります。
高齢者、特に主婦の方はずっと家事に取り組んでこられました。
中には家事をすることを生きがいとされている方もいます。
もしその生きがいを「お母さんはしなくていいから」と取り上げられると、どうでしょう？
プライドが傷つきますね。
自分でできるのに「やらせてもらえない」といった声もよく聞かれます。
一見、ただの役割とも思える家事は、継続する事で誇りに変わり、高齢者にはそれが生きがいとなり、意欲的な生活を送るための原動力になっているのです。
まだまだ必要とされている、頼られているという気持ちが、実は高齢者を元気にさせているのです。
家事が介護予防になる
家事は重労働で大変と思うかもしれませんが、「労働」と思わずに「運動」としてとらえてみましょう。
家事を代わりに行う事は簡単かもしれませんが、その結果、今までできていたことができなくなり、自信を失ってしまいます。
動かない事で筋力や体力も低下し、廃用症候群（体を動かさない事により、筋肉や体力が低下し、全身の身体能力や精神状態に悪影響をもたらす症状）を招いてしまう恐れもあります。
だからと言って、全ての家事を任せなければならないわけではありません。先ほどの洗濯でいえば、洗って干すところまでをやってもらい、取り込み収納はこちらで行ったり、食事作りであれば洗う、切るといった過程をやっておいてもらうなど、分担してみるのはどうでしょう？
もちろん、トイレや入浴などは代わりにできません。
しかし分担して行うことを話し合うことで、お互いの気持ちもわかり合う事ができ、プライドを傷つけず、負担に感じることもなく、家族の中での役割ができるのではないでしょうか。
適度な運動として行う家事は、介護予防としても効果的です。
そのため、少し億劫に感じている高齢者の方でも、やる気を引き出す手段としても効果が期待できます。
すぐに手助けをしてしまう前に、「促す」「励ます」といった「見守る」事が、重要ではないでしょうか。
まとめ
家事は生活全般にわたって関連していることが多く、生活の活性化につながっています。
例えば買い物をしている時に近所の方と出会ってコミュニケーションがとれたり、掃除をして部屋がきれいになったら人を招きたくなるかもしれません。
あるいは料理番組で見たおいしそうな物を作ってみたいといった、意欲を引き出すことができます。
ご家庭の状況により、全ての家事を分担する事は難しいかもしれませんが、大切なことはたとえ時間がかかっても、時には頼り、時には励まして見守り、今できている事を続けていくこと事が重要です。
知らず知らずのうちに本人の生活を活性化させ、介護予防にもなりますので、根気よく取り組むことをお勧めします。
