映画「ペコロスの母に会いに行く」は認知症の母を抱える団塊世代の息子を主人公としたストーリーです。

団塊世代のサラリーマン、ゆういち（岩松了）は 長崎生まれ。ちいさな玉ねぎ「ペコロス」のようなハゲ頭のため、ペコロスと自身を名乗っている。ゆういちは漫画を描きながら音楽活動をしつつ、母のみつえ（赤木春恵）の面倒を見ていました。みつえは父さとる（加瀬亮）の死を機に認知症を発症していたのです。みつえは迷子になったり、汚れたままの下着をタンスにしまったりするといった行動が見られるようになってゆきます。認知症が徐々に進んでいる母みつえを目の前にゆういちは悩んだ挙句、みつえを介護施設に預けることにしました。
ゆういちは自身の生活を送りながら、みつえに会いに行くため、介護施設に通うのが常となりました。
しかし、みつえの認知症は進んでゆきます。みつえは、苦労した少女時代や夫との生活といった過去へと意識がさかのぼっていることもあるようです。そんな母みつえの様子を見て、ゆういちの胸にある思いが行き来きします。
家族を老人ホームなどの「施設」にいれることは介護ではないのか
もともと、この映画の原作はマンガで、作者はゆういち/ペコロスこと岡野雄一さん本人です。実は岡野さんと実の母のエッセイマンガを元にしたものだとのこと。
映画「ペコロスの母に会いに行く」がメディアで話題になった際、岡野さんは「（母を）施設に入所させただけだから、介護映画と言ってもよいのか」とも話されていたようです。しかし、家族を施設に預けたからと言って介護をしていないことになるのでしょうか。
私は次のように考えました。広辞苑に介護は「高齢者・病人などを介抱し、日常生活を助けること」と記されています。健康は「身体に悪いところがなく心身がすこやかなこと。達者。丈夫。壮健。また、病気の有無に関する、体の状態。」とあります。
介護を必要とする方が心身共に健康でいることを目標に存在しているのが、高齢者施設です。
施設へ入所されている家族に会いにいき、話す、遊ぶ。私はこれも非常に素晴らしい介護だと思います。介護者が全て自分で介護のケア行うからと言って、介護を必要とする家族が幸せであるとは限りません。介護者が辛い、暗い顔をしている方が家族は辛いかもしれません。
核家族が増えた新しい時代の考え方として、自分の生活も大切しながら、母を思い施設への入所を決断したゆういちのは、自身にできる範囲で、自身の母にしたい介護を精いっぱいのしていたのではないかと感じました。
記憶の中で旅をする認知症の高齢者
劇中でみつえはたびたび幼い頃に戻り、当時の友人と遊んていました。またある日は、結婚当時を思い出し、（今を生きる時代には亡き）夫と幸せな時間を過ごしたり、子どもの頃のゆういちの手を引いて過ごしています。
いずれもみつえ記憶が当時に戻り、施設スタッフや周囲の人にその記憶のまま話を続けるのでした。
認知症の方は様々な症状と（一般的に見ると）問題行動を起こすタイプに分かれます。
大きく「葛藤型」「 遊離型」「 回帰型」の3つにわけることができますが、みつえは「回帰型」タイプの様でした。
回帰型の方は「娘が待っているから家に帰らないと…」「仕事に行かなくてはいけない時間です、駅にいかなくては」などと言いながら出掛けようとする、自宅に戻りたがると言った反応を示します。
現在の自分を受け入れることができず本人の認識が過去のものとなり、若かった頃の言動が現れるようになるのです。
回帰型はご自身の人生を頑張って切り拓いてきた方や、または若い頃から夢を追い生きてきた方に多いと言われています。
戦後困難な日々で、時代を切り開こうとしてきたみつえのような年代の方には多いのかもしれません。
多くの方がこの回帰型になる可能性があると考えられます。そのため、施設でも多くの方がこの回帰型様の認知症状を示していました。
それに対し、みつえの施設スタッフやゆういちは否定せず、その場に居合わせてもらいながらも本人が安心する状況を作ることができるようにしているのが印象的でした。
